Social Media: “Will It Blend?

Do you remember Blendtec’s “Will It Blend?” video series? They demonstrated how their blender could even blend an iPad2? This series of videos currently has over 2 million views.

The company used social media only after creating a social marketing strategy. As small business owners, we often dive right into Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and YouTube campaigns and postings without giving enough thought of what is our strategy and what we should actually say.

We forget that Facebook and Twitter are tools and they are not a strategy. Mr. George Wright, former vice president of marketing for Blendtec said, “If you’re going to build a house, what do you do? You start with a plan; you don’t start with a hammer.”

So do you have a social media marketing plan? Do you send messages about your company, your brand or your products/services …

Will Facebook’s Instagram Purchase Increase Mobile Use?

Last week’s blog we wrote about Pinterest and how it’s become the third most popular social site behind Facebook and Twitter. On Monday, April 9, 2012 Facebook purchased Instagram for $1 billion in cash and stock.

Instagram was launched in October 2010 by Stanford University graduates Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger. They created a new iPhone application where users share photos with followers and post comments and “like” recommendations. Some consider Instagram the visual version of Twitter, and the place to share photos.

Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook founder and CEO said in a post, “For years, we’ve focused on building the best experience for sharing photos with your friends and family,” and he continued to say, “Now, we’ll be able to work even more closely with the Instagram team to also offer the best experiences for sharing beautiful mobile photos with people …

What is Pinterest?

What is Pinterest?

Our Socially Now blog in mid-March mentioned Pinterest for the first time, and how it had a smaller following than Facebook. What is Pinterest and why the rave reviews? It’s another social media site that is engaging particularly among women (60/40).

Todd Wasserman, Mashable’s business editor reported several days ago, “Pinterest is now the number three most-popular social network in the U.S., behind Facebook and Twitter, according to Experian Hitwise.” The report ending in January showed Pinterest had 21.5 million visits for the last week of January 2012.

These stats put Pinterest at number 3 just behind Facebook and Twitter for most visited sites. Do not confuse it with most “unique visitors”, which is not what the report indicates. It also does not include mobile usage. Regardless, it beat out LinkedIn who was number 4, and …

Because QR codes are scanned with a mobile device, it’s natural to see the connection. Who is more excited about QR codes: marketers or consumers?

According to Nielsen/McKinsey’s NM Incite, QR codes increased from .002% in June 2010 to 0.15% in March 2012. Some may argue that’s not such a huge increase compared to other alternative mobile technologies like “Near Field Communication” (NFC). These are all positive and can boost you image, but how about a testimonial? How powerful would a written or even better yet a video testimonial be? It’s not unusual for most websites to have a testimonial tab for potential clients to view. For most businesses, testimonials are a spectacular way to help increase their client base.

Tweets also make good testimonials because they’re short and to the point with 140 characters or less. Typically they’re written when …
